Amidst the countless hardships of life in Cuba and despite the present-day migration crisis, the younger generation is shaping a new reality defined by nonconformity, gender diversity, and resilient creative expression. The New Cubans is a visual journey into this lesser-known Cuba, uprooting the cliché depictions of Cuban cigars, vintage cars, all-inclusive resorts, and Cold War echoes.
The book was launched at ParisPhoto in early November and at Perrotin in New York City in following weeks. Dates to be announced soon for book signings and exhibitions in multiple international cities.
The book includes an essay by the Cuban art critic and curator Jorge Peré as well as an interview with Yale professor, photographer and editor, Matthew Leifheit.
