For the Exile from Babylon body of work, I documented a squatters' camp in the California desert. Driven by the vast Californian inequalities, homelessness, drug addiction or simply libertarian values, community members live without running water, electricity and local government. I spent many weeks living in this dystopian community. It was a very emotional experience. If I sometimes felt like a voyeur (a frequent concern for documentary photographers), I mostly felt connected to people and their very moving life stories. I found myself crying, laughing and thinking a lot about the vast contrasts in living conditions displayed in California.
